Upminster season ticket rip-off
Jan 3rd, 2008 at 4:57pm

I’d be interested to know if any other passengers travelling into Fenchurch Street from Upminster have found a way around a monumental fares rip-off on season tickets, namely their being obliged to pay for an all-zones travelcard, even if they only travel no further than Fenchurch Street and therefore have no need of a tube/bus add-on.  c2c’s own customer services dept. seem confused by the issue, as I’ve been told by them that it is possible to purchase a c2c-only season ticket and even been quoted prices (far cheaper than I’m currently paying) , only to be told by weary station staff at Upminster that they wish Customer Services would stop giving out this incorrect information as they can only sell travelcards and AREN’T able to sell a rail-only season ticket from Upminster to Fenchurch Street.  The ludicrous situation that results is that I’m actually paying more for my monthly ticket than City workers living further out of London and travelling in on c2c, as they aren’t forced to buy a travelcard. I’ve submitted several complaints and requests for justification to c2c on this issue, as yet with no response other than ‘we’ll get back to you’ (this has been since the beginning of December).  This ridiculous and extortionate ruling, however, doesn’t appear to apply to day returns, as in the few days leading up to the Christmas break when my season ticket had expired, I was able to buy returns to Fenchurch St. only for £8- considerably less than a travelcard at over £13 (which only underlines how much I’m paying through the nose every month for an unnecessary season ticket add-on).  Has anyone else confronted c2c with this issue?

This has always been the case (as far as I can remember) for single/returns as well as seasons. This is because you are in effect buying a London Underground ticket for the entire journey. i.e. the ticket is inter-available between c2c and the District Line between Tower Hill and Upminster (in fact the £8 you paid is the cost of standard London Underground return from zone 1 to 6).

The other side of the coin is that you may find it cheaper to use Oyster PAYG for journeys between Upminster and Fenchurch Street (especially if either part of your journey is ever early or late, or you only travel 5 days a week max). £4 / £5.50 / £6.50 / £7 return depending on the time you travel.

"c2c-only" season tickets to Fenchurch Street are definitely not available from Upminster, Barking or West Ham. The last stations on the fares leaflet they produce every year is always West Horndon and Dagenham Dock. i.e. the last stations where they are the sole operator and are able set fares.
