As I live within earshot of Tilbury Town station, we received a letter notifying us of (noisy) engineering works to replace the apparently noisy rails just west of Tilbury Town.

This seems pointless to me. I'm sure they have replaced this area of track within the last 4 years, I remember the letter apologising for the grinding sound from new track (which disappeared within months). Why the need to replace them again?!

The main sound you hear is the train engine accelerating/decelerating and obv that's never going to disappear.
