January 2010: Oyster PAYG from Grays
Nov 9th, 2009 at 1:02pm

Deep in the detail of this TfL document is the news that Oyster PAYG will go live at Ockendon, Chafford Hundred, Purfleet and Grays from January 2010. The stations will form part of a new fare zone "G" in which c2c will set the fares (a similar situation currently exists for Watford Junction).

There is unfortunatly a down-side to weekend fares due to the Oyster card system arrival:
I was wondering what hidden fare rise c2c would impose this Jan. & here it is.
The arrival of Oyster means the cheap weekend day-returns within the new zones vanish.
Fares will rise by up to 45% at weekends! For example:
Ockendon to Chafford return: currently £2.20 goes up to £3.20 = 45% increase.
Grays to Chafford return: currently £2.50 goes up to £3.20 = 28% increase.
Grays to Fenchurch St. return: currently £6.40 goes up to £7.80 = 22% increase
This is because Oyster doesn't have weekend fares, just peak & off-peak.
c2c seem to have decided the Oyster fare will be the cheapest available.
Hence the new cheapest weekend prices rise to equal 2 off-peak Oyster single fares.

National Rail/ATOC have removed all cheap day returns in the Oyster PAYG area on all lines. Anyone who previously used cheap day returns who does not use an Oyster card will get stung by peak fares. Not sure how well National Rail/ATOC are publicising this change.

I am less than suprised to see that c2c are still ripping off customers even if they use an Oyster Card!
According to oyster's advertising the card should give the lowest fare possible, however:
Grays to Upminster oyster off-peak fare is £1.90
Upminster to Zone 1 off-peak oyster is £2.40
So Grays to zone 1 off-peak oyster fare should cost no more than the combined price of these 2 @ £4.30
So why is c2c charging 32.5% more (£5.70) for the same journey on oyster!!!
I have emailed c2c & TFL to ask.

Another anomaly is Grays<>Liverpool Street off-peak is £3.90 if you exit through the National Rail gates and £5.70 if you exit through the Underground station.

This is because Transport for London services (and National Rail services that accepted PAYG before 2010) operate on one fare scale and all other National Rail services operate on another. As an added complication if your journey crosses from one fare regime to the other (and includes zone 1) you get stung by a third higher regime that typically adds £1+ to the cost.

Here is a map with the two areas for fares marked: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/oyster_map.pdf
